Everything You Want to Know

Honest answers about how Sleep Dentistry works, what to expect, and why IV sedation is the safest and most effective option.

Sleep Dentistry — also called "Twilight Sleep", "Conscious Sedation" or simply "IV Sedation" — involves starting an IV (usually in your arm) and administering medications that make you deeply comfortable. Most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure. It also calms anxiety, turns off the gag reflex, and allows us to complete all your dental work in a single, comfortable visit.

With IV sedation we have precise, real-time control over the level and duration of sedation — something that's simply impossible with pills. Pills affect every person differently, can't be reversed, and may wear off mid-procedure. IV access also provides a direct route to administer reversal agents if ever needed, giving us a much larger safety margin.

This type of sedation is performed hundreds of thousands of times per day worldwide. Dr. Boren has been safely performing Sleep Dentistry for over 30 years and is a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. All primary sedation medications have reversal agents, and our team maintains constant training. It is viewed as the safest method of dental sedation available.

All of them — implants, root canals, fillings, crowns and bridges, bone grafting, wisdom teeth, and even just dental cleanings. It's not about the procedure; it's about your comfort.

Many offices that offer IV sedation limit themselves to 1–2 simple procedures per visit and refer complex work elsewhere. Because Dr. Boren is fully trained in all aspects of dentistry — implants, root canals, crowns, bone grafting, and more — he developed a technique that keeps patients safely sedated for longer sessions, completing extensive treatment all in one comfortable visit.

Nervousness is completely natural. Our team will walk you through everything, answer all your questions, and explain each step as we go. What most patients tell us afterward is that just knowing they'll be sedated is enough to calm them significantly. After one experience with our gentle, caring approach, patients return relaxed and confident the following visits — the nervousness about dentistry simply goes away.
